The Possibility of Steam Powered Automobiles
While many of the latest fuel alternatives being studied are new, many of them are not. The use of steam power is not at all a new invention but it is one that needs to be perfected if it is to become a viable resource. Like any other option currently under scrutiny, it's going to have both advantages and disadvantages. It's a matter of picking them apart to see how it measures up in comparison to other environmentally friendly solutions.
One advantage the steam engine has over the gas engine is durability. Steam engines have widely been used in Heavy Duty machine work. Because steam engines are much heavier than gasoline engines, it is the better choice for any type of heavy duty work. Industrial uses of this type of fuel could make a great impact on the health of the environment.
The original steam engine car was introduced in 1912. At first it sold much better than a gas car. It didn't manage to stick around as a number one source for consumers and it eventually faded out as preference was put on gas cars. A number of factors contributed to this issue, one of them being the fact that many people feared a boiler explosion. It rarely happened but it was a common fear among many at that time.
A steam engine has a slower start up time than a gas powered engine does. It also requires much more maintenance. Since convenience and timing is everything today, those types of quirks would have to be worked out before this would be something today's society would be willing to invest in. Everybody wants faster and more efficient products. Nothing less with suffice.
At this moment, no major car manufacturers have a steam engine option in production. With gas and hybrid vehicles leading the way in the market, there is no room for an idea that has not yet been taken to its maximum potential. Consumers are being pickier with their automotive purchases in regards to the environment. Fuel alternatives must be worth the investment.
One benefit of the steam engine is that it is able to run off of the heat given off by any combustible material. This means that it has more than one possible fuel source. Vehicles that can run on more than one type of fuel are a hot item. It's like having the best of both worlds in one efficient package.
The British has recently been working hard on a steam powered car that they believe is another step toward the future. They plan to bring it to the United States in order to break a world record. As more people in various countries do their part to advance scientific study on steam engines, as well as other realistic options, the faster the world will be able to turn away from petroleum and diesel fuels.
As study continues in an attempt to reduce harmful emissions and harsh chemicals from the atmosphere, there is plenty that can be done by consumers as well. Keep informed of growing changes and trends in order to make your investments count.
