Visiting Illinois on Your Next Road Trip
Illinois is a state that many road travelers overlook as a destination spot. But if you're in the mood for gorgeous scenery, a peaceful environment and down home Illinois campgrounds, you should make Illinois your destination. Northwest Illinois is part of the Midwest's "driftless area," a section that includes parts of Wisconsin and Iowa left virtually untouched by the glaciers that flattened much of the Midwest. Located in these rolling hills is the Apple River Canyon State Park, offering miles of hiking trails through canyons and hills. Take a ride down the Great River Road (Ill. 84) as it follows the Mississippi southward. Soon, one arrives at the Mississippi Palisades State Park, where hiking trails follow craggy cliffs and wooded bluffs that tower over the Mighty Mississippi. Deep, limestone canyons welcome visitors to Starved Rock State Park, a 2,600-acre park situated along the Illinois River. Enjoy camping near by at a large number of Illinois RV camping resorts and Illinois campgrounds.
In central Illinois, just east of Champaign/Urbana, lies the Middle Fork of the Vermillion River, a haven for canoeists and fishermen alike. The river crosses through the 11,000-acre Kickapoo State Park, home to nearly two dozen lakes and ponds. Boaters seem to enjoy nearby Clinton Lake State Recreation Area and its ever-popular 4,900-acre waterway.
Southern Illinois holds the Prairie State's finest natural wonders. Giant City State Park hosts wonderful hiking trails traversing sandstone bluffs and other rock formations found throughout this unique area. For its part, the Shawnee National Forest encompasses most of the state's southern reaches, as well as several fascinating smaller parks such as the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Fern Clyffe State Park, Garden of the Gods and Cave-in-Rock State Park.
