AKC Requirements For A Chesapeake Bay Retriever
A Chesapeake Bay retriever is a dog breed that finds its hunting origins in the Chesapeake Bay; they did a lot of hunting beneath the water. The dog often had to break through the ice in order to gain access to game. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever specialized in hunting water fowl, especially ducks. Once the dog got access to the game, it was required to sit perched with the game until the hunter arrived to prevent it from being stolen or it would swim back to the hunters boat with the game in its mouth. The breed is also referred to as a Chessie and since 1993, has been an honorary member of the American Kennel Club. The American Kennel Club has specific breed requirements for the Chesapeake Bay retriever, the dog must comply physically in order to participate in AKC events.
The dog has an even temperament and is known for being keenly intelligent. The demeanor of the breed is one of affection and warmth. The dog is extremely protective of their owner and is not known for being overly aggressive or dominant. The AKC breed standard will disqualify any dog that exhibits extreme shows of aggression or shyness. Either of these personality traits diminishes their quality as a family pet or hunting companion.
The fur of the Chessie is a double-coat, with a short, hard, wavy outer coat with fine, wooly hair underneath. The hair of the coat should not be over 1 ½ inches in length, and have an abundance of natural oils which helps the dog in colder conditions and makes the coat water proof. The body is strong and powerful, the dog is medium sized with a wide chest and medium length legs. The American Kennel Club does not allow for any body weakness, it is not characteristic of the breed.
The dog can range anywhere from 21-26 inches in height, with males being slightly taller than females. If the dog is overly large or smaller than the recommended size, the result will be disqualification from AKC events. The size of the dog should be in total proportion and the distance from the shoulder to the elbow should be equal from the elbow distance to the ground. Chesapeake's normally weigh between 55-80 pounds and while some people think they are a larger breed, they are actually medium in size.
The head of a Chesapeake gives the dog an air of intelligence, with large, expressive eyes that are yellowish-amber in color and set far apart from one another. The dog has smaller ears which are set high up on the head, but hang loose with a leathery-look. The nose of the dog is short, with the muzzle and skull being equal in length. The chest and back of the dog are strong; the body almost has a hollowed look because the flanks are so highly situated on the body. The tail of a Chesapeake is medium in length and denser at the base. The Chesapeake Bay retriever has a sleek, glossy coat and an all-round regal and beautiful appearance.
